Devlog - April 20th, 2025


Hello, everyone! Happy Easter if you celebrate! And if not, Happy April nonetheless! ❤️

I'm here again with a new devlog to share some updates!

SPRITES & EXPRESSIONS

I'm really happy to announce that sprites are almost finished! Mustache has already made Arthur, Aslan and is currently only missing some color touches for Carl! 

Here you can see how Arthur's and Aslan's sprites look in-game:


The expressions are another thing, though. As mentioned in past devlogs, Fawna's and Oz's sprites and expressions are completely finished but the expressions for Arthur, Aslan and Carl are still missing (to save time, Mus drew the neutral expressions first).

Hopefully by the end of April we're able to have all expressions finished! I believe! 💪

BACKGROUNDS

A new background—the Police Department background where Fawna (or MC) works at the beginning of the game—has been completed!

As for Ruby Road, Danu's still working on it, but here's a little WIP that has references to some games (2 are mine and one is of a dear friend):

As mentioned in the previous devlog—not counting the Police Department and Ruby Road—there are 6 backgrounds left along with their night versions.

Since it was too much for one person, there will be another background artist taking over the remaining backgrounds for the DEMO: Hadara Madrak! Hadara has worked with me before for some logos and her background art is also really cool! 🥰

As, realistically, it's quite tricky to make 6 whole backgrounds for Otome Jam 2025—when this final DEMO will be released—we decided to focus on 3 backgrounds (and their night versions) and leave the remaining ones for a later update.

I decided the most important ones at the moment were: the outside of Cub of Coffee Cafe, Arthur's living room and Arthur's kitchen. The ones that are left (the outside of Fawna's apartment, Golden Meadows' Park and Arthur's bathroom) will be added after Otome Jam; so expect to see some placeholder backgrounds from Minikle in the meantime.

CODING & WRITING

GREAT NEWS! I finished re-writing the scenes I was missing from chapter 0 and implementing all of Fawna's and Oz's expressions as well!

Arthur's and Aslan's sprites have also been implemented, only they have one single expression at the moment 😂 I'll have to add their remaining expressions once they're finished so they don't look like weirdos. 

As mentioned above, Carl's sprite is almost finished too, so his sprite should be added into the code soon enough.

Apart from these things, I'm also really happy to announce that Killer Trait now has some accessibility options thanks to HusbandoGoddess! The menu bottons and in-game choices have sound when you hover over them AND there is now an option to choose fonts (including OpenDyslexic)!

The spacing of the text is now a bit bigger as well, so it's easier to read~

CGs

There's been a bit of a change. It's possible that the new DEMO will have some CGs, but I'm not certain about how many exactly. I at least would like to have 2 for Otome Jam, but we'll see! If we can't make it in time, the remaining CGs will be added on a later update.

ANIMATIONS?!

Yes, you read that right! Killer Trait will have a couple of animations, but probably not for what you might be imagining.

These animations will be for the choices! You know how some dating-sims have indicators whenever you make a choice that love interests like? This will be similar, only the indicators WON'T be for Oz's affection. Oz is still the love interest of the game, but these indicators are not for his affection, rather, they're for which of the 3 routes you'll be heading towards.

I mentioned several months ago that Killer Trait will have 11 in-game days, right? While the story will function more or less the same in the first 9 or 10 days, the remaining day(s) will determine which route you have entered. And each route will have 2 different endings.

Yep, basically, Killer Trait will have 3 different routes and 6 different endings (2 for each route).

What do each of these routes entail, you might be asking? I'll be keeping the suspense, but I'll leave you with 3 different colors to speculate: red, blue and green.
